Anyone in recovery desires several things. You want to remain free of the drug you had been using and you want to alleviate the negative physical and emotional conditions that were created by that addiction. Hopefully, you also want to lead a healthier life in general. In order to move along a new path in life in which you are becoming and staying healthier, you must not only stay free of your previous substance abuse, but you should live in a more wholesome manner, one that is not just, not unhealthy, but one that actively promotes good health. One important way to do this is to detoxify your body and keep it free of all harmful, toxic substances. To do this, you ought to eliminate certain habits to avoid these other substances, in addition to remaining free of the drug you were abusing. For this reason, knowledge of the effects of various foods and chemicals is essential to being able to find and stay on the path that leads you to better and better health.

Sometimes sociological conditions and peer influences can distort ones view of the real situation. A good example of this was cigarette smoking. Older movies are a good indication of the social norms at the time. Not only did most people start smoking in social situations, but the person who did not smoke was considered not really as much a part of the social group. Of course, now most people are fully aware that not only is nicotine very addicting, but the intake of the toxic smoke is extremely harmful and unwise, and it is morally wrong to make those around you inhale toxic second hand smoke. Today, things are different and it is the person who wants to smoke, who is a bit of an outsider, and who often finds themselves literally outside, when they have to smoke in another location, like outside a restaurant or even outside an apartment where they are a visitor.

Today, caffeine is an accepted drug, just like nicotine was many years ago. In fact, caffeine is the most widely used drug in the world. Some may feel that it is probably not as harmful as the toxic smoke that went along with nicotine addiction and cigarette smoking. Nevertheless, there is no doubt, that caffeine is very harmful to the health of a person. In the Western world, 8 out of 10 adults consume caffeine in some form. Presently many Americans are hooked on caffeine. Ninety percent consume it in one form or another every single day. Over half of them consume more than 300 milligrams of caffeine every day. It is in coffee, tea, soda, chocolate, and a variety of other things, and is our nation’s most popular drug.

Caffeine occurs naturally in many plants, including coffee beans, tea leaves, and cocoa nuts. Caffeine is really a biological poison used by plants as a defense against being harmed and injured by the other forms of life in their environment. The caffeine gives seeds and leaves a bitter taste, which discourages their consumption by insects and animals. If predators continue to eat a caffeine-containing plant, the caffeine can cause central nervous system disruptions and even lethal side effects. Most of them learn to leave the plant alone.
Though it is widely known that caffeine is an addictive and unhealthy drug, it is widely consumed and as much a part of American contemporary life as smoking was years ago. With the spread of and popularity of coffee bars, coffee, one of the main sources of caffeine in people’s diet, is more popular than ever. (Tea and hot chocolate, also consumed at these coffee bars contain significant caffeine, but not as much.) Around one third of all coffee drinkers say they can’t do without it and are clearly addicted. Tolerance for caffeine for anyone drinking coffee can develop rapidly and lead to the desire to increase ones consumption. Someone used to drinking six or seven cups of strong coffee a day will begin to experience withdrawal symptoms on waking and then every two to three hours after the last coffee drink. If you are seeking optimum health, however, you should severely curtail your coffee consumption, and eventually stop consuming it at all. It is a drug and the last thing any of us needs is another addiction.

When most people think of caffeine they immediately think of coffee, and yet much of the caffeine that is ingested does not come from coffee at all. In fact, people who do not drink coffee may be ingesting quite a great deal of caffeine regularly. The fact is, caffeine is an addictive additive in most commercial sodas.
Caffeine has many effects on the body and brain. For example, as your body becomes fatigued, adenosine is made in the brain, and binds to adenosine receptors. This causes drowsiness by slowing nerve cell activity. The result is that you will want to stop and rest. You will want to go to sleep. This is healthy, for you need the rest. The adenosine also causes blood vessels to dilate in the brain, so more oxygen can reach the brain during sleep.

When caffeine is ingested and goes into the stomach, it quickly travels to the brain. Once there it binds to the adenosine nerve receptors. But instead of cellular activity slowing, this results in it speeding up. The cell can no longer bind with adenosine, because the caffeine is linked up with all of its available receptors. The usual effect of adenosine is blocked in this way and the cell begins accelerating its activity. In addition to this, because adenosine is shut out, the brain’s blood vessels begin to constrict. The increased neuron firing in the brain stimulates the pituitary gland. The pituitary signals the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline (epinephrine), the “fight or flight” hormone.Unfortunately, when the adrenaline wears off, you feel fatigued and that drives you to get more caffeine. As you go through this cycle many times through the day, you will find yourself becoming more and more irritable.

Caffeine raises the blood pressure and increases the levels of various stress hormones, and for those very sensitive to it or consuming large quantities, it can cause heart palpitations and nervousness. If sustained by regular coffee drinking over a lifetime, these increases in blood pressure and heart rate will elevate the risk of stroke and heart disease. Heavy coffee drinkers, those having five or more cups per day, were two to three times more likely to have coronary heart disease than were nondrinkers.

Caffeine at a high level can eventually lead to exhaustion of the adrenal glands. Caffeine is a chemical stimulant that increases blood levels of the hormones produced by the adrenal glands. The adrenal hormones regulate stress response, blood pressure, blood sugar, mineral levels, immune activity, inflammation, and cell growth and repair. Long term caffeine consumption contributes to adrenal insufficiency, in which over 150 hormones produced by the adrenals or metabolized from adrenal hormones no longer function adequately.
Caffeine causes the body to produce greater amounts of cortisol, the body’s stress hormone. These elevated levels can last for hours having a negative effect on serotonin and dopamine production. Anxiety will increase and even depression can result from these changes.

People sometimes feel sharper after their cup of coffee, however the increased cortisol will lead to restricted blood to the brain and eventually causes poorer mental performance.

People who chronically stimulate their adrenal glands to overproduce cortisol alter their daily pattern of cortisol concentrations so that cortisol is low in the morning when they wake up instead of high. So they reach for a cup of coffee to artificially spike their cortisol levels up again. These same people experience huge cortisol surges at meals causing them to overeat. They have higher body fat, lower muscle mass, and reduced metabolism, so they burn fewer calories. They don’t sleep well at night because elevated cortisol levels keep them from entering the deep, rebuild and repair stage of sleep the body needs for recuperation. High levels of cortisol will also compromise your immune system and interfere with your body’s ability to fight off pathogens.

Be aware that if you frequently drink coffee or have other sources of caffeine, including ,especially, the many popular caffeinated sodas ,and find that at end of the day you are regularly stressed out and exhausted, even depressed and worried, it could very well be the result of the caffeine generating large amounts of cortisol in your body.

In the end, those seeking the healthiest life should avoid the caffeine to be found in many popular beverages. You should avoid caffeinated coffee, and even Decaf, which is not totally caffeine free, and get in the habit of reading the ingredients on the labels of all sodas and drinks, and choose only the ones which are free of caffeine. Fortunately, for those in successful recovery from alcohol, which had caused hangovers and interfered with the important REM sleep, the powerful need for caffeine in the form of coffee in the morning no longer exists.

MARIAN was afraid! Without notice, her nose had begun to nosebleed freely. “I thought I was going to die,” she recalls. A doctor educated Marian that her nosebleed had been caused by high blood bully (major hypertension). “But I feel minute,” answered Marian. “Many people do not know that they have high blood bulldoze because they have no symptoms,” she replied. What about your blood make? Could your recent life-adapt root high blood demands in the coming? What can you do to keep your blood demands under check? Blood hassle is the push blood exerts against blood vessel ramparts. It could be exact using an inflatable rubber clout, which is wrapped around the high arm and linked to an apparatus that account demands. Two readings are obtained. For example: 120/80. The first number is called systolic blood burden because it shows blood demands during the heartbeat (systole), and the instant number is called diastolic blood burden because it shows blood demands while the item is relaxed (diastole). Blood heaviness is unhurried in millimeters of mercury, and physicians classify patients as hypertensive when their blood heaviness is above 140/90. What makes blood hassle intensify? Imagine that you are watering your garden. By break the faucet or by dropping the ability, or diameter, of the jet of water, you spread the compel of the water. The same occurs with blood bully: Increasing the consider of tide of blood or decreasing the ability of the blood vessel elevates the blood heaviness. How does high blood load strike? Many factors are difficult. Factor You Cannot Control Researchers have discovered that if a being has relatives with high blood force, his odds of anguish from the disease are superior. Statistics denote an elevated incidence of hypertension in matching twins than in fraternal twins. One cram refers to the “mapping of the genes responsible for through hypertension,” all which would fortify the life of a hereditary module responsible for high blood coerce. The endanger of abnormally high blood strain is also known to growth with age and to be superior among black males. Factor You Can Control Watch your diet! Salt (sodium) can boost blood mass in some people, especially people with diabetes, those with plain hypertension, elder people, and some blacks. Excess fat in the bloodstream can fashion deposits of cholesterol on the domestic stockade of blood vessels (atherosclerosis), thus sinking their caliber and increasing blood bulldoze. People who are more than 30 percent above their perfect body weight are apt to have high blood make. Studies suggest that increasing the intake of potassium and calcium may inferior blood heaviness. Smoking is related to a greater gamble of atherosclerosis, diabetes, kindness dose, and stroke. That being so, smoking and high blood anxiety are a dodgy combination that can conduct to cardiovascular diseases. Although the show is contradictory, caffeine-enclosed in auburn, tea, and cola drinks-and emotional and natural stress may also heighten high blood load. In addition, scientists know that intensive or unending consumption of alcoholic drinks and lack of unrefined activity can mount blood hassle. Healthful Life-Style It would be a blooper to wait at high blood load to answer before charming sure steps. A healthful life-design should be a concern from an early age. Taking bother now will result in a better attribute of life in the prospect. The Third Brazilian Consensus on Arterial Hypertension clear the life-chic changes that choose shrinkage in major blood bulldoze. They are a valuable manual to people with high or common blood strain. For the stout, researchers recommended a balanced low-calorie diet, avoiding promptly and “miracle” diets, while maintaining an agenda of moderate corporeal train. Regarding saline, they optional consumption of no more than six grams or one teaspoon per day. In essay, that means keen to a smallest the use of salt in food preparation, as well as minimizing canned foods, cold cuts (salami, ham, sausage, and others), and smoked foods. Salt intake could also be abridged by refraining from adding trimming salt during the meal and by scrutiny the packaging of processed foods to see how much salt has been added. The Brazilian Consensus also suggested increasing the intake of potassium because it may have an “antihypertensive result.” That being so, a healthful diet should contain “foods that are low in sodium and abundant in potassium,” such as beans, darkness green vegetables, bananas, melons, carrots, beets, tomatoes, and oranges. Keeping alcohol intake at a moderate flatten is also important. Some researchers show the hypertensive males should consume no more than one little [30 ml] of alcohol per day; and women or those with low body weight no more than one the degree [15 ml]. The Brazilian Consensus determined that ordinary objective employ decreased blood pressure and thus lowered the endanger of developing principal hypertension. Moderate aerobic exercise, such as walking, cycling, and swimming, for 30 to 45 action, three to five times a week is beneficial. Other factors that have been associated with a more healthful life-shape compose quitting smoking, controlling blood fats (cholesterol and triglycerides) and diabetes, getting an adequate intake of calcium and magnesium, and controlling mean and emotional stress. Some drugs may expansion blood pressure, such as nasal decongestants, antacids high in sodium, desire moderators, and caffeine-containing painkillers for migraines. Certainly, if you have arterial hypertension, your doctor is in the best site to give you opinion on your diet and behavior, according to your delicate needs. Regardless of your post, however, adopting a healthful life shape from an early age is forever beneficial, not only for hypertensive people but for all the members of the family. Marian, mentioned at the start of this item, had to make changes in her life-tailor. Currently she takes medication and leads a typical life although her shape snag.

If you are concerned about your blood pressure you should consider monitoring it from home. You still want to keep your regular doctor visits but this will help ensure you are making the right lifestyle choices. There is nothing more frustrating than changing your entire lifestyle for your blood pressure only for it to show no change. While this can sometimes happen, you might just need to add medication. If you decide to monitor your blood pressure at home you want to keep a record. By doing this you can see what is working and what isn’t in lowering or maintaining your blood pressure. When monitoring your blood pressure you have choices of the equipment to use. You can use an aneroid monitor that has a dial gauge and uses a pointer to read. You can also use a digital monitor with the option of a manual or automatic cuff. With a digital monitor your reading will flash on the screen. Some people might suggest using a finger or wrist monitor but these have been proven less effective. They are not as accurate, more movement sensitive and more costly as well. When choosing your monitor you want to choose one that has the right cuff size for you. If you are unsure of what size to get, ask your doctor. If the cuff size is wrong your reading will be wrong, therefore you receive no benefit in the end. If you want to be sure you are operating the blood pressure monitor right take it to your doctor. They can show you how to use it correctly. Using it the right way will ensure you get the right readings. There are certain things you should to before checking your blood pressure. You do not want to drink or use any caffeine, alcohol or any tobacco products thirty minutes prior to checking. You want to be sure you use the restroom first as well. Relax and don’t talk for at least three to five minutes prior to taking a reading. Make sure you are completely comfortable. Do not cross your legs or arms and keep your back straight. When you strap the cuff on, you want to be sure your arm is at the same level of your heart. Rest it on a table or solid surface. Be sure the cuff is snugly fit around your arm but still has room for a finger. The bottom of the cuff should be an inch from the crease of your elbow. Understand what your numbers mean before monitoring your blood pressure from home. Normal blood pressure would be a reading of 120/80 or less. High blood pressure would be 160/100 or higher. Anything in between these readings would mean prehypertension and this means you are on the way to developing high blood pressure. You want to avoid this at all costs if possible and if you find your numbers increasing consult your doctor. Together you can find an effective way of helping you decrease your blood pressure. You might even have to consider blood pressure medication.

What is High Blood Pressure?

According to statistics, one out of every three adult Americans have high blood pressure. Blood pressure is defined as the amount of force that the blood uses on the veins and arteries as it circulates through the body. A healthy person’s blood pressure should be around 120/80 mm Hg or even lower. Blood pressure that consistently measures 140/90 mm Hg or higher is considered high blood pressure.

If left uncontrolled, it may increase the risk of serious health problems including heart attack, kidney failure or stroke.

There are two types of high blood pressure: First, there is primary high blood pressure in which there is no known underlying cause and second, there is secondary high blood pressure which occurs as the result of a medical condition or as a side effect from medications.

What makes high blood pressure so dangerous is that most people do not experience any symptoms, even when blood pressure readings are dangerously high. This is why it is called the “silent killer.” However, some people may notice one or two of the following symptoms if their levels are consistently raised: headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, increased nosebleeds.

What Causes High Blood Pressure?

For most people, the cause remains unknown, making primary blood pressure the more prevalent of the two. While it is not entirely known why primary high blood pressure occurs, research is ongoing and a number of factors have been implicated. Since high blood pressure often runs in families, a strong genetic component has been indicated.

Other risk factors for high blood pressure include smoking, alcoholism, high salt intake, being overweight, lack of exercise, and high levels of stress.

Some conditions known to cause secondary hypertension are: diabetic nephropathy, kidney disease, Cushing’s syndrome, hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, arteriosclerosis (a thickening, hardening and narrowing of the walls of the arteries), underlying heart conditions, sleep apnea, obesity, pregnancy (especially in cases of pre-eclampsia) and side-effects of certain medications or supplements.

Natural Remedies for High Blood Pressure:

Garlic — Eating garlic is a very good way to lower high blood pressure. It has beneficial effects on the whole cardiovascular system. Clinical studies have shown that garlic decreases the systolic pressure by 20-30 mm Hg and the diastolic by 10-20 mm Hg. During one of these studies people with high blood pressure were given one clove of garlic a day for 12 weeks. Their diastolic blood pressure and cholesterol levels were significantly reduced.

Coenzyme Q10 — CoQ10 has been proven to be effective in treating people with a common type of high blood pressure. A clinical trial was done where half the people were given 60 mg of CoQ10 twice daily for 12 weeks and the other half were given, of course, a placebo. The people taking CoQ10 had an 18-point reduction in systolic blood pressure.

Magnesium — It is well known that magnesium deficiency leads to high blood pressure. Because our modern diet lacks magnesium, most Americans are deficient in this mineral. Many studies have shown that it helps significantly to take magnesium daily for the treatment of high blood pressure. Magnesium can also be taken to prevent hypertension.

Lysine, Proline and Vitamin C — This is a protocol by Linus Pauling, a nobel prize winner, to cure plaque build up in the arteries and thus reduce high blood pressure. To find out more about this protocol go to the saveyourheart.com website.

Cinnamon — In recent studies it was shown that cinnamon helps lower high blood pressure as well as reducing serum cholesterol levels. Below is a list of other herbs that are used to lower blood pressure. Herbs can be taken in capsules, as tinctures, you can use them in cooking if appropriate, or your can use them as a tea.

    * Hawthorn

    * Gingko biloba

    * Ginseng

    * Gotu Kola

    * Skullcap

    * Ashwagandha

    * Burdock

    * Hawthorn

    * Nutmeg

    * Cardamom

    * Kelp

Lifestyle Changes to Reduce High Blood Pressure:

You might want to get your own blood pressure machine and keep track of your blood pressure yourself. This way you can see what causes it to go up or to go down.

Do about 30 minutes of aerobic exercise each day such as walking. Don’t overdue it and exercise too much as it then becomes stressful to your body and may increase blood pressure.

Eat a lot of potassium rich foods such as vegetables and fruits.

Drink lots of water, between 8 to 15 glasses of water a day. Drinking lots of water mimics what the drugs your doctor prescribes are doing. It relaxes your body, including your arteries.

Learn to relax, slow down and manage your stress levels. Stress is a huge influencing factor in high blood pressure.

Knowing about your body can be very beneficial to your health as you age. Knowing about your blood pressure can help prevent strokes, heart disease and kidney disease. In this article you will find everything you should know about your blood pressure. Anyone can have high blood pressure. It doesn’t matter your age, race, ethnicity or gender. Many people suffer from high blood pressure and have a higher risk of strokes and heart diseases than those with regular blood pressure. What is high blood pressure? High blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of your arteries. Your blood pressure is always rising and falling throughout the day and if it rises and stays that way over time, you have high blood pressure. High blood pressure is usually referred to as hypertension. When you have high blood pressure it puts more pressure on the heart, making it work harder than usual. This is why you end up at risk for strokes or heart disease. What is the normal blood pressure level? The normal blood pressure level is less than 120 over 80 or less. The first number is your systolic pressure and the second number is your diastolic pressure. Your numbers are read 120 over 80, etc. If your pressure is 140 over 90 or higher you have high blood pressure. What is systolic blood pressure? This is the force of blood in your arteries when your heart is beating. What is diastolic blood pressure? This is the force of blood in your arteries when your heart is relaxing. What are the risk factors of high blood pressure? The most common risks of high blood pressure are stroke and heart disease. There are a few other risk factors that can be modified and some that cannot be. The following are some risks: Tobacco Physical Inactivity Diabete Abnormal Cholesterol Being overweight Who can get high blood pressure? Unfortunately anyone can get high blood pressure but it is more common among African Americans. Nearly one in three American adults has high blood pressure. African Americans also have a much higher death rate from kidney disease and stroke than white Americans. Even so, with treatment you can help lower your blood pressure. How can I lower my blood pressure? Fortunately there are many different ways of helping to lower your blood pressure. Exercise is a great way to lower it. Doing physical activity will make your heart stronger over time. If you have a stronger heart it can pump blood easier lessening your risks of stroke and kidney diseases. It is never too late to start exercising! If you are concerned about your blood pressure consult your physician. Ask any and all questions you might have and find the best way for you to lower it. If all regular ways fail, consider medication. Talk with your doctor about your health and lifestyle so he can choose the best medicine for you. If you want to live a healthy life, taking control of your blood pressure is very important.

It is true that high blood pressure symptoms are not always visible to the eye but this does not mean that there are not obvious signs to look out for. Having this condition can affect both men and women at any time. It can occur more commonly in people who smoke, are over weight, live a high stressed existence, do not regularly exercise and do not eat healthy. If you are someone like this then you are known of as a high risk. I suggest you go to your doctor for a check up now!

If this is the case for you and you are diagnosed with this condition then you are at risk of a heart attack, stroke and even kidney disease. All of these can be fatal! In saying this, it doesn’t mean things cannot be reversed. Yes you can do something about this! First off you need to see your doctor to check out these high blood pressure symptoms or signs. Once you have been told that you are in the high catergory then you may need to go on medication straight away to bring it down. Once on medication though, you usually stay on it. You should try to avoid this.

Taking medication in itself maybe ok as it helps lower you blood pressure, which is important, but what you should be doing is trying to get it down by living a healthier lifestyle. Lose weight, quit smoking, cut out added suger and salt, exercise and try to cut back on stress. Ok, so the stress factor may be harder than you think but once you are healthier you will also feel better in other ways as well.

Some people have been known to show some form of symptom that can include fatigue, dizziness, headaches, blurred vision, nausea but of course these could also be signs of many other conditions. So I suppose the one important thing to remember apart from keeping fit and healthy is regularly visiting your doctor. Having check ups to keep on top of things. It isn’t just high blood pressure symptoms that should be a concern to you but many other factors that can contribute to bad health. This is true especially as we age. Check ups and preventative measures are always the best option to living a full healthy life.

As I said before many people won’t know that they have high blood pressure as it is not a major visible condition but there are signs to look out for that can contribute to this. Take a good look at yourself and your life style and please go to the doctors for regular check ups. Life is too important to let slip away just because we live busy lives. Our work and families deserve us to be healthy.

Whenever you are first diagnosed with high blood pressure or you see various television stories talking about blood pressure, it seems they always speak of changing your lifestyle in order to better control the disease. But exactly what lifestyle changes will help? Do these changes actually make a big difference? As you might suspect, lifestyle changes can most definitely help in reducing high blood pressure levels. Let’s take a look at some of the most helpful changes you can put into action.

Diet

Undoubtedly, changing your dietary habits will have one of the biggest effects on improving blood pressure levels.

- Eat more whole grains and cut down on white flour products.

- Eliminate saturated fats and use virgin olive oil. This tip alone has shown a reduced need for hypertension medications in a past study.

- Include more fresh fruits and vegetable in your diet. Foods like bananas, oranges, melons, carrots, celery, mushrooms, broccoli and others may help in lowering high blood pressure.

- Add more oily fish such as salmon into your diet. The omega-3 fatty acids that are contained in fish are very beneficial to good heart and cardiovascular health.

Salt

Reducing salt intake is another proven lifestyle change that lowers blood pressure. Did you know that we should consume less than one teaspoonful of salt each day? That is approximately 2,400 mg.

Many people will use a salt substitute at home and that’s a great idea. The problem though is in the bigger picture. Roughly 75% of the salt intake in your typical American diet comes from foods eaten outside of the home, typically fast foods and processed foods. If you have doubts about this you can simply look at the sodium levels on the package labels. I’m not picking on McDonald’s, but you have enough sodium in one quarter-pounder to last the entire day. And that’s not even counting the salty fries!

Exercise

This is a lifestyle change that can also go a long way in reducing high blood pressure levels. It’s also one that is the most difficult changes to start.

There have even been studies that have shown moderate exercise to control hypertension to the point where high blood pressure medicines were no longer needed.

Smoking, Alcohol and Caffeine

By now I am sure everyone knows you should not smoke. Cigarette smoking and good health just don’t mix. Reducing alcohol and caffeine consumption will also lower blood pressure levels as well as provide other health benefits for years to come.

Weight Loss

With nearly one-third of American adults being overweight or obese, it’s easy to see why high blood pressure is at record levels. Several studies have proven that by losing weight and reducing sodium intake many people with hypertension have been able to reduce or eliminate blood pressure medications.

These are only some of the major lifestyle changes that can help reduce high blood pressure. There are several others as well, but the important point is to asses where you currently are and begin making change in the areas you need to. By doing so you begin getting high blood pressure under control.

High blood pressure is a health issue that causes innumerable fatalities in the United States each year. Further, if it doesn’t kill you, it can still lead to major problems, including heart attack and stroke. And sodium is an ingredient of a high blood pressure diet as it is one of the major high blood pressure causes. Consequently, this article will help you learn about the role of sodium in the development of high blood pressure.

Read the Ingredients

Unfortunately, given its prevalence, a good amount of the sodium you digest comes from processed foods. A good habit to develop, before buying such food, is to read the ingredients label. Unfortunately, those labels, with their multisyllabic words, seem like they aren’t written in English. You feel as if you need a chemistry degree to understand them. Well, to help, remember that foods that contain ingredients with the word “sodium” in them can be bad news. For example, take disodium phosphate and monosodium glutamate (MSG). The word “sodium” is visible. Miminize your use of such ingredients and foods.

Also, the US FDA , to aid people’s dietary choices, developed sodium guidelines. For example, “low sodium” equates to 140 milligrams or less of sodium per serving. Or, as another example, 5 milligrams or less of sodium per serving is “salt free” food. Google FDA sodium for the entire guide. If necessary, bring it with you to the grocery store to allow for quick and easy interpretation when you shop.

Further, highly processed foods often contain high levels of sodium, making them contributory to a high blood pressure diet. I can only imagine the thoughts going through your head now. You’re busy and have no time to cook. You rely on frozen dinners and canned goods to quickly whip something up for you and your family. Unfortunately, a good amount of these foods are laced with sodium.

The Infamous Salt Shaker – One of the More Prominent High Blood Pressure Causes

Finally, like most people, you probably grab for the salt shaker at the center of your dining room table to add some quick flavor to your sometimes bland food. And, to compound the matter, you may be adding salt to processed food that already contains high levels of sodium. So resist the “salt shaker” temptation. Perhaps you might even empty your salt shaker. Further, use natural herbs to add flavor to your food. Consider onions or thyme, for example. This may be hard to do, but it’s in your body’s best interest.

As you can see, sodium not only presents a high blood pressure health issue, but also is hard to avoid given our busy lives. If you look at your food labels, especially those of processed foods, you’ll start to see sodium everywhere. So remember to avoid ingredients with the word “sodium” in them as sodium can play a huge role in a high blood pressure diet. Also, use the Food and Drug Administration guidelines to monitor your sodium use. And put down that salt shaker!

Take these small, proactive steps and you are on your way to eliminating some high blood pressure causes and earning better health.

Do you have high blood pressure? Maybe you want to prevent getting high blood pressure, no matter what the case is, there are everyday things you can do. What you eat, how much you exercise, even your habits can effect your blood pressure. If you see your doctor regularly you more than likely have your blood pressure checked every time. This is a necessary procedure to monitor your pressure and be sure you don’t have high blood pressure. There are different reasons one has high blood pressure and different things you can do to help lower it. If you have high blood pressure it damages your blood vessels increasing your risk for stroke or heart and kidney diseases. In other words, having high blood pressure is very harmful to your health and you want to treat it right away. Making lifestyle changes is the first way to go when you want to lower your blood pressure. If doing these simple changes does not help and you have to use medication, continue doing the changes along with the medication. The lifestyle changes alone may just not be enough and added with medication could help significantly. If you use any tobacco of any kind, stop your use or decrease it significantly. Nicotine makes your blood vessels constrict resulting in a faster heart beat. This faster heart beat raises your blood pressure. You can easily find products that help quit smoking or help quit the use of other tobacco products. If you are overweight you are at a high risk of high blood pressure. Start a diet program and start eating healthier. Exercising regularly is very beneficial to lowering your blood pressure. Plan an exercise routine and track your progress. This will show you what is working and what is not. Eat plenty of fruit and veggies and try a low fat diet. Try to stay clear of sodium, alcohol and caffeine or at least limit your intake. Sodium isn’t harmful to everyone’s blood pressure but until you know for sure, it is better to take precaution. Alcohol can cause high blood pressure in some people as well. Try to only drink one or two alcoholic beverages a day. If you know this is increasing your blood pressure, try to quit altogether. Your health might be at risk. Stress can sometimes affect your blood pressure. Stress is very common and there are millions of ways to help reduce stress. Try some relaxing techniques first and if none of these work talk to your doctor. They may have some better suggestions. If all else fails you may have to turn to medication. There are many types of medicine to help you lower your blood pressure. You may end up taking this medicine for the rest of your life but if it helps keep you healthy, it is worth it. If you are still unsure of how to handle your blood pressure talking with your doctor is the best solution. Tell them of your concerns or ask them any questions you might have. No question is stupid when it comes to your health. You could even do some research online and find out many things about blood pressure. You are not the only one curious about taking care of your health. Take the necessary steps to live a long healthy life.

Our blood pressure is the measure of the force of your blood against the artery walls, and it is described using two numbers: systolic and diastolic. Systolic pressure is the pressure exerted as your heart beats; diastolic pressure is the pressure exerted as your heart relaxes between beats. A normal blood pressure reading used to be less than 140/90 mmHg, with 120/80 mmHg as the ideal. But recent changes in the guidelines set normal as less than 120/80 mmHg. It is normal for your blood pressure to fluctuate during the day due to physical activity or stressful stimuli; it should return to normal as your body adjusts to whatever situation you’re in. If it does not, if your blood pressure is chronically elevated to greater than 140/90 mmHg, then the condition is called hypertension. Hypertension is unfortunately common, affecting more than 50 million Americans. We used to think that only diastolic pressure was an important predictor of cardiovascular events, but it is now understood that both numbers matter. Elevated systolic pressure is a key indicator of stroke risk, especially in the elderly. Left uncontrolled, it can also result in kidney disease, vascular disease, and increased risk of heart attack. The most common cause of hypertension is aging. Blood vessels lose their elasticity as we age, and that reduction in the ability to expand and contract can lead to a rise in systolic pressure and a decrease in diastolic pressure. A young, healthy artery reacts just like a balloon would in response to increased pressure-it expands. Older arteries aren’t always flexible enough to do so, which means blood ends up pressing against the artery wall with greater force. Another common cause of hypertension is heredity predisposition. Someone with a strong family history of hypertension is at higher risk of developing hypertension later in life than someone with no family history. Hypertension that is caused by certain treatable conditions is called secondary hypertension. Nutritional causes are surprisingly common. One question I always ask patients is if they eat licorice. Licorice contains glycyrrhizin, a substance that may cause sodium retention and lead to hypertension. Excessive salt, alcohol, and caffeine can also increase blood pressure. Decreasing or eliminating these from the diet can do a lot to reverse hypertension. Other secondary causes of hypertension may be reversible through surgery. These include constriction of the aorta, a tumor on the adrenal gland, or a blocked renal artery. People who also snore may have obstructive sleep apnea, a cause of hypertension that has several treatment options. In other words, even if you’re leading a healthy lifestyle, you could still develop hypertension. This is why a complete evaluation by your personal physician is necessary. Diagnosing and eliminating any secondary causes can significantly reduce or even eliminate hypertension altogether. If you have no secondary causes, however, the best way to treat hypertension is with lifestyle changes, even if you also need medications. I recommend a four-part program for all my patients with high blood pressure, consisting of: 1. Nutrition 2. Exercise 3. Stress management 4. Smoking cessation Nutrition From years of clinical studies, we know a lot about the impact of various foods on blood pressure. Fruits and vegetables, for example, are particularly rich in phytonutrients, which we’ve learned help lower blood pressure. In fact, all the foods essential to the Mediterranean diet discussed in step 1 — fruits and vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, cold-water fish, red wine, nuts, and beans — have been shown to help lower blood pressure. There are also specific foods you should stay away from because of their negative effects on blood pressure: saturated fat, trans fat, and sodium. In addition, excessive consumption of caffeine and alcohol can lead to a rise in blood pressure. My first recommendation here is to follow a Mediterranean diet. But you can also add individual foods to your diet that contribute to reducing blood pressure. Green tea contains catechins, antioxidants that inhibit the action of an enzyme responsible for raising blood pressure. Pomegranate juice has recently gained attention for its ability to lower blood pressure as well as inhibit atheromatous plaque formation. Even chocolate can be beneficial if you eat the right kind and limit the amount. Moderate consumption of a small amount of dark chocolate, rich in flavanols, contributes to healthy blood vessels, which ultimate:ly leads to reduced blood pressure. Increasing your intake of potassium, magnesium, and calcium may also have a beneficial effect. Supplements are one way to this, but you can also just choose foods rich in these minerals. Foods that contain a lot of potassium include tomatoes, bananas, blueberries, and oranges. Foods that contain a lot of magnesium include nuts, seeds, beans, fish, whole grains, and green vegetables. And dairy products are a particularly rich source of calcium. Exercise Exercise lowers blood pressure in a few ways. One way is by supporting weight loss, particularly the reduction of abdominal fat. Fat in this area is associated with elevated levels of a protein called angiotensinogen, which can lead to hypertemion. Exercise also strengthens the heart and makes the cardiovascular system more efficient by relaxing and dilating blood vessels. And if you exercise instead of raiding the refrigerator as an outlet for stress, you can both eliminate emotional eating and help yourself maintain a healthy weight. As mentioned in step 2, simply walking thirty to forty-five minutes each day can lead to significant benefits. Stress Management Stress releases catecholamines, chemicals that prepare the body for physical activity and can raise blood pressure. See step 3 for suggestions for reducing stress. Smoking Cessation Cigarette smoking causes arteries to constrict and contributes to blood pressure elevation. Smoking’s negative health impact, and some tips for quitting, is covered more in-depth in step 7 in the discussion on toxins. If you currently smoke, stop. No amount of smoking is safe, and it is counterproductive to an otherwise healthy lifestyle.
